I received this invitation to attend “The Memorial of Jesus Christ’s death” on April 14th 2014.
By “invited” I mean that someone quietly walked up to our front door, pushed the flyer almost entirely into our home, and then moved on to our neighbor. This happens on occasion as the JWs cannot be bothered to read the posted ‘no soliciting’ signs. I usually take the opportunity to open a dialogue with the unwanted thumpers or to even spend my morning removing as much of the religious spam from the other neighboring condo doorways and mailbox bulletin boards.
The western portrayal of the fictional character Jesus Christ as a robed white dude with outstretched arms invites you to attend the memorial of his death.
If Jehovah’s Witnesses want an accurate portrayal of Jesus Christ from Jerusalem, he would have looked more like this:
The flyer references Luke 22:19 as Jesus Christ’s instruction for remembrance. Does Luke contain any other interesting passages? Let’s find out.
Slavery – Not only are god and Jesus totally cool with slavery and other atrocities throughout the bible, Jesus gives the big thumbs up to beating slaves in Luke… even if they do not know they were doing anything wrong.
The servant will be severely punished, for though he knew his duty, he refused to do it. “But people who are not aware that they are doing wrong will be punished only lightly. Much is required from those to whom much is given, and much more is required from those to whom much more is given.” (Luke 12:47-48 NLT)
Failed Predictions – Jesus falsely predicts that some of his listeners would live to see him return and establish the kingdom of god.
“Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:27 NAB) and then later with ” … Amen, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place. (Luke 21:25-33 NAB)
Isolate Your Followers – Jesus also sounds suspiciously like a cult leader trying to drive family members against each other.
“If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.” (Luke 14:26)
Jesus not for you? That’s a murderin’
But as for these enemies of mine who did not want me to be king over them—bring them here and slaughter them in my presence.” [spoken by Jesus as a parable] (Luke 19:27 NRS)
Faith Gives You Superpowers
“Even if you had faith as small as a mustard seed,” the Lord answered, “you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘May God uproot you and throw you into the sea,’ and it would obey you! (Luke 17:6 NLT)
Authority to Steal
As they came to the towns of Bethphage and Bethany, on the Mount of Olives, he sent two disciples ahead. “Go into that village over there,” he told them, “and as you enter it, you will see a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here. If anyone asks what you are doing, just say, ‘The Lord needs it.'” So they went and found the colt, just as Jesus had said. And sure enough, as they were untying it, the owners asked them, “Why are you untying our colt?” And the disciples simply replied, “The Lord needs it.” So they brought the colt to Jesus and threw their garments over it for him to ride on. (Luke 19:29-35)
Getting Re-married? That’s Adultery!
Everyone who divorces his wife and marries another commits adultery, and the one who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery. (Luke 16:18 NAB)
Don’t forget the penalties for adultery either.
Compassion and morality? Not so much.
The four pictures of
stock photos the people and children are equally interesting. Look at us! We’re diverse! We accept everybody! We tell small children they’ll burn forever in hell if they don’t obey god/us!
The history of Watchtower literature is quite different when it comes to equality. There is an excellent post at Cedar’s blog, jwsurvey.com, which includes a lot of scans and video.
The forced indoctrination of small children is the most disturbing. Vulnerable and undeveloped minds forced to believe that they will be abducted from everything they love, taken underground, and burned/tortured for all eternity. Child abuse. Check.
The last part of the flyer that stood out was the second invitation to another talk entitled “Why Would a Loving God Permit Wickedness?”
This is the same “Loving God” that murdered over two million people?
So no, I am not interested in learning about this cult’s ridiculous interpretation of god’s love. God pretty much has the monopoly on wickedness all by himself.
Since the Watchtower and jw.org are distributing such a blatantly dishonest and disgusting piece of unsolicited garbage, here is a “fixed” version of the flyer.
